Here is a photo of a Japanese style katana made in the late 1980s. The blade is D-2 tool steel, all other sword and scabbard furniture is stainless steel. The handle is wrapped in twisted stainless steel wire. The scabbard is covered in black leather with ebony sash loop. The 29 inch blade is about .165 inch thick. The weight is about 1.5 pounds. This uses the Japanese tang style construction, with bamboo tang peg. It is signed and numbered on the long tang to preserve purity of form. The photo was taken by Jim Weyer.
