I was a knife and sword maker for many years, but these days I mainly focus on making fantasy coins under license for various science-fiction and fantasy realms, including George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones” series, Patrick Rothfuss’ “Kingkiller Chonicles” and Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series.
I’ve also tried my hand at writing a science-fiction/adventure novel centered around the adventures of a group of graduate students and Yooper locals in U.P. Michigan in the year 2017. It’s entitled A SUPERIOR STATE OF AFFAIRS. Think: The Big Bang Theory meets Northern Exposure in Warehouse 13. Click above for a link to the text, the dust-jacket blurb and first three chapters are available online. It is now available as a paperback from the publisher, AuthorHouse, or from any major bookstore.
Peggy and I have been married since 1975 and we have three kids, all grown up now. I have a couple degrees in Geosciences from Michigan Tech and Univ. of Arkansas. We moved from the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan down here to Springdale Arkansas in 1977 to pursue what had just been a hobby… the making of custom knives and swords. I formed Maringer Custom Cutlery in 1977. I pursued that trade for nearly twenty years, gaining quite a good reputation and traveling to knife shows all over the U.S. and Europe. In 1994 I decided to pick up my long-sidelined academic career. Fortunately I kept all my workshop equipment, and when I later became interested in making coins, there was little difficulty in picking up the techniques and pursuing them.
In 2003 I licensed with George R.R. Martin to make in-world coins for his A Song of Ice and Fire series, (later made into an HBO series using the title of the first book “A GAME OF THRONES“). In 2012 I licensed with Bandersnatch Inc. to make coins for Robert Jordan’s THE WHEEL OF TIME series. In that year I also hired a full-time helper, Don Upton to assist in keeping up with rising demand. As of the beginning of 2014 I have brought my son Woody back as a full-time helper… so there are now three of us in the workshop, plus another couple of helpers on the packaging and shipping side of things. Several other new and exciting author arrangements are in the works, including Lee Modesitt, Patrick Rothfuss, and Peter V. Brett and some we can’t even talk about yet.
It all started as a fan-art project to encourage immersive fantasy, but has blossomed into a true vocation as more people have come to enjoy the handling of artifacts from their favorite worlds.
