The Hobbit™ Set #3 - The Shire Four Farthings
THE SHIRE™ Farthings
Four tiny Farthings from The Shire. These are the smallest coins a Hobbit would have. Each denomination of Shire coinage has 4 variations featuring different trees. This four tree group contains all four possible trees: pine, elm, willow, and oak. Worth just one quarter of one penny, each Farthing features a Tengwar symbol of its associated cardinal direction, a tree, “Shire Year,” and the date.
The coins in this set from the world of J. R. R. Tolkien are struck from solid copper, measure 1 cm in diameter, and weigh 0.5 grams. Coin artwork by Greg Franck-Weiby.
The set contains coins treated to look as if they have been handled and circulated within their world. This process is done by hand, and it is both an art and a science. Coloring and patinas will vary. No two sets are exactly the same! Coins are struck one at a time in the USA using antique machinery and traditional coining techniques. A colorful description is included with history, translations, and facts about the coins.

Very cool! The envelope the coins came in was so cool!
I Myrtle Bolger write this. I have a leather pouch that was given to me long, long ago on a “bussday,” full of coins that were picked up by way of adventures on the part of a distant relative … They were always fascinating to me! Coins of lands far beyond the borders of the Shire – pennies of old and new Dale, a crescent from Rivendell, a coin with a galloping horse from the steppes of Rohan ... But of all the adventures and years represented by this glorious hoard, it’s the tiny Shire farthings that are the dearest to me. Tiny and bright they were when I was a child and received them on an earlier “bussday” to became my first hoard! Tiny and bright they remain, undimmed by the passage of time. Here is the most powerful magic, of any Elvish spell or Dwarvish rune: the love of home, however small, however simple -- always bright.
These tiny little Shire farthings bring perspective to a pocket full of other Shire and middle earth coinage.
I have duplicates of these and can say each one is unique. The four in my set are fairly shinny but some of my loose ones are darker and look more carried. The detail is fantastic for their small size.
Fast shipping. Great presentation! It was a gift and the person really loved the whole thing. Came in an officially wax sealed envelope that they really liked.
