Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken

This heavy copper coin was made in Dorne to honor House Nymeros Martell, its most powerful house. It features a Dornish ship and mountains on the reverse, with the Martell's sun and spear sigil and their house words, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken", a reference to Dorne remaining unconquered by the Targaryens for centuries before eventually joining the Seven Kingdoms peacefully through marriage.

Another fine coin for Game of Thrones.

Fairly well done.

I like the design of this coin, but am less than impressed with the execution, in terms of quality. The die was poorly centered on the planchette, the edges are very rough, and the image stamped by the die is lacking in clarity on the edges of the images and lettering. This is probably done with the intent of adding an aged character to the coin, and in the pictures on the site it succeeds. In reality, on the coin I received, it simply makes the coin look cheaply produced. I can not decide if a cheaply produced coin would have been desired by the Martell family or if they would have demanded impressive, quality coinage from their mint. So my verdict is not available regarding the quality of the coin versus the "historical accuracy" of the coin in terms of representing the minting technology available in this fictional era versus the lord's desire to keep minting costs low, versus the lord's pride in producing quality coinage.

So while I certainly like the coin’s design, I am less than impressed with the execution.

I am not certain if I would buy one of these again, knowing what I do now. This knowledge also makes me EXTREMELY leery of purchasing any of the mint’s more expensive coins, which I do covet with fervor. In this I refer to the silver Hobbit coins and the silver Gondor coins. If I purchase them will I have a similar sense of being betrayed in my expectations as I did when first examining this coin?

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the Martell coin. It is possible that you received a coin that was off-center. We try to pull all of these out and quarantine them when we package them, but some slip through. The rough edge is actually an aspect I cherish since we are (as far as I know) the only mint that is broadstriking coins. This means that there is not a 'collar' around the coin die that creates flat or reeded rim. It means the coins have to be placed in the press by hand and more off-strikes happen per capita that way as well. Let me know if you would like an exchange :)

Incredible artistry. I love this coin so much. I actually use it in lieu of a worrystone, so it’s seen a lot of travel and use and it’s still just as awesome as the day it arrived (the packaging, too, made the purchase for myself feel even more like a gift).
