The Hobbit™ Set #3 - The Shire Four Farthings
THE SHIRE™ Farthings
Four tiny Farthings from The Shire. These are the smallest coins a Hobbit would have. Each denomination of Shire coinage has 4 variations featuring different trees. This four tree group contains all four possible trees: pine, elm, willow, and oak. Worth just one quarter of one penny, each Farthing features a Tengwar symbol of its associated cardinal direction, a tree, “Shire Year,” and the date.
The coins in this set from the world of J. R. R. Tolkien are struck from solid copper, measure 1 cm in diameter, and weigh 0.5 grams.
Designed and engraved by Greg Franck-Weiby. Learn more about our artists.
The set contains coins treated to look as if they have been handled and circulated within their world. This process is done by hand, and it is both an art and a science. Coloring and patinas will vary. No two sets are exactly the same! Coins are struck one at a time in the USA using antique machinery and traditional coining techniques. A colorful description is included with history, translations, and facts about the coins.

I feel fortunate to be alive during a time when we have access to such remarkable artisanship as can be found in Shire Post Mint’s coinage. The very highest quality and attention to detail. One can feel that a love of the art goes into the creation of each of these coins, which themselves supply a sense of reaching back into a world where everything that one used had been lovingly created after a similar fashion. Would definitely purchase again.
Many, many years ago I purchased a set of four SR 1401 Farthings, made of both worn brass and copper. My more recently purchased SR 1404 Farthings are all copper based and splendidly shiny as though freshly minted in Hobbiton. For such petite diminutive coins, they remain intricately detailed. These are a fantastically affordable entry level coin for every collector. Worth every penny!
These may be the smallest coins of the Shire, but they are elegant in their simple splendor, nonetheless. Each coin has a different tree, and they are so beautifully detailed that I can almost hear the wind sighing through their boughs. I can't say enough about the exquisite packaging of these coins. Even my name, in a sort of Middle Earth calligraphy on the detailed specialty envelope complete with a Gondorian seal, makes me long for an extended vacation in Middle Earth. Beam me up, Gandalf!!!!!
Bought these for my son and he loves them! Intricate details on these tiny little coins. Hobbit sized coins for hobbit sized hands!
These were a magical surprise for me. The farthings are a wonderful product, well made, and will be a great present. Great workmanship and received it in a timely manner.
